How best to organize group trips by boat

Sailing across the sea together, the wind in your hair and the laughter of your friends on board – a group trip on a boat is an unforgettable experience. But a little planning is needed to ensure that the trip is harmonious and relaxed. Whether you want to rent a catamaran or prefer a classic sailing yacht, here you will find valuable tips on how to organize your trip perfectly.

1. Choosing the right type of boat: Catamaran or sailing yacht?

Before we start packing, the most important decision has to be made: Which boat suits the group?

  • Catamaran: Ideal for larger groups as it offers plenty of space, stability and comfort. A catamaran is particularly popular with groups of friends or families with children. The wide decks invite you to sunbathe and the cabins are also spacious.

  • Sailing yacht: Sportier and somewhat narrower – but pure authentic sailing feeling. A classic choice for smaller groups who want to experience active sailing.

If you want to rent a catamaran – for example in Croatia – you will find a wide selection of modern models that are specially designed for groups.

2. Book early: Charter a boat in Istria

Especially in the high season, well-equipped boats are quickly snapped up. Especially in popular regions such as the Istrian coast, you should charter a suitable boat well in advance. You can choose between bareboat (sailing yourself) or a charter with a skipper.

If no one in the group has the necessary sailing license or you simply want to relax, a skipper is the ideal solution – he knows the best anchorages and takes a lot of the organizational work off your hands.

3. Observe the group dynamics

Not everyone is seaworthy or shares the same ideas about a vacation. Clear agreements in advance help to avoid misunderstandings:

  • How sporty should the trip be?

  • Do you cook together or do you prefer to eat out?

  • Who takes on which tasks on board?

If you divide up roles – for shopping, cooking or navigation, for example – everyone feels involved.

4. Plan the route – but stay flexible

Whether island hopping or a leisurely bay tour: plan your route so that everyone gets their money’s worth. Popular destinations in Istria such as Rovinj, Pula or the Brijuni Islands offer cultural highlights and fantastic anchorages.

At the same time, flexibility is crucial on the water. Wind and weather can change plans – so always keep an eye on alternatives.

5. Supplies, equipment & entertainment

Make sure you have enough provisions, drinking water and snacks – especially if you are heading for remote bays. Many boats offer a well-equipped kitchen so that you can relax and eat on board.

For entertainment: games, Bluetooth speakers, books or snorkeling equipment ensure fun on the water. On a catamaran, there is also enough space for yoga or group workouts on deck!

6. Safety first

A short safety briefing at the beginning is mandatory: where are the life jackets, how does the radio work, what to do in an emergency? Even in the best of moods, safety on board should be the top priority.
