The Croatian boat license regulation explained

International Boat Licenses – Overview

If you are planning to explore Croatia’s breathtaking coastline on your own – be it with a sailing yacht or a catamaran – the question quickly arises: which boating license do you actually need to legally operate a boat? In this article, you can find out everything you need to know about the Croatian boating license regulations – explained in a compact and easy-to-understand way.

Do I need a boating license in Croatia?

Yes, Croatia generally requires a boating license as soon as you operate a motorboat, sailing yacht or catamaran with more than 15 hp – in other words, almost every charter boat. The Croatian government strictly checks whether the crew has the necessary qualifications. Without valid documents, there is a risk of heavy fines.

Which driving licenses are recognized?

Croatia recognizes a large number of foreign boating licenses – including, of course, German, Austrian and Swiss licenses. Here is an overview of the most common certificates valid in Croatia:

  • Sportbootführerschein See (Germany) – Valid for boats at sea, also recognized in Croatia.

  • FB2 (Austria) – For voyages up to 20 nautical miles from the coast, also recognized.

  • Permis Mer (Switzerland/France) – Usually also valid if issued internationally.

  • Croatian Coastal License (Boat Leader License Category B) – Can also be obtained by foreign guests in Croatia.

Important: In addition to the license, a VHF radio certificate is required if your boat is equipped with a radio. This can be the SRC (Short Range Certificate) or the UBI (VHF inland radio), for example.

Which boats am I allowed to operate?

That depends entirely on your license and the length of your boat. With a valid coastal license and radio certificate, you are allowed to sail in Croatia:

  • Motorboats with over 15 hp

  • Sailing yachts and catamarans (depending on size)

  • Also larger charter boats up to approx. 30 GT (gross tonnage) – depending on license and experience

If you want to rent a catamaran in Croatia, for example, you need a license that covers both sailing and engine operation – and usually the SRC radio certificate.

Chartering a boat in Istria – what applies?

Chartering a boat is particularly popular in Istria – the region scores with short distances, well-developed marinas and mild weather. But the same applies here: no license, no skipper.

Alternatively, you can also charter with a skipper. Many providers offer you the option of booking an experienced skipper. This allows you to relax and enjoy yourself while someone else takes responsibility.

Can I get a Croatian boating license as a tourist?

Yes, many vacationers take the so-called Croatian coastal permit directly on site. The exam is comparatively simple, mostly theoretical and can be taken in English. You can obtain the license within a day – ideal if you travel frequently in Croatia or want to operate a boat spontaneously.
