Wildlife in Istria: Dolphins, seabirds and more that you can spot while sailing
Dolphins – the stars of the Adriatic
If you sail in Istria, there is a good chance that you will see dolphins in their natural habitat. Bottlenose dolphins, one of the best-known dolphin species, are particularly common. These fascinating marine mammals are known for their acrobatic leaps and playful behaviour. They often live in small groups and sometimes curiously accompany boats – a sight that makes every sailor’s heart beat faster.
You have the best chance of spotting dolphins in the early morning or evening hours when the sea is calmer. Look out for them near the coasts of Rovinj, Poreč or the Limfjord.
Seabirds – masters of the skies
The coasts of Istria are a paradise for birdwatchers. Seabirds such as cormorants, herring gulls and shearwaters often accompany you during your sailing trip. Particularly impressive are the elegant shearwaters, which glide just above the surface of the water, or cormorants, which sit on rocks with their wings spread out and dry themselves.
A highlight for bird lovers is the Cape Kamenjak Nature Reserve, where, with a bit of luck, you can observe rare species such as the little tern or the osprey.
Sea turtles and other sea creatures
With a bit of luck, you may also spot sea turtles. The loggerhead turtle in particular is native to the Adriatic. They sometimes pop up unexpectedly next to your boat to catch their breath. But be careful and keep enough distance so as not to disturb these sensitive animals.
You may also encounter other sea creatures such as jellyfish, shoals of sardines and occasionally even rays. The underwater world of Istria is diverse and lively – perfect for snorkelling stops.
Early booking pays off
The sailing season in Istria runs from May to October. The high season between July and August is particularly popular, so you should book early to secure the best boats and prices. Early booking discounts or last-minute offers can help you save money.
Tips for responsible observation
- Respect nature: keep enough distance from the animals and do not follow them. Noise and fast manoeuvres can stress dolphins and other animals.
- No feeding: Wild animals must not be fed, as this can affect their natural behaviour.
- Avoid rubbish: Make sure no plastic or other rubbish goes overboard to protect wildlife.
The best time for wildlife spotting
The summer months are ideal for discovering Istria’s wildlife, as the weather is stable and visibility is good. But you can also experience exciting encounters in spring and autumn, especially with migratory birds that stop off on the coast during this time.
